Field Trip To Hypermart “Taking Mathematics Lesson to Contextual Matters”
In terms of facilitating the contextual learning of mathematics in daily lives, 5th graders of Sekolah Dian Harapan Bangka visited Hypermart. They were learning about the concept of rounding and estimation. For example, the mathematical problem given to the student like "Estimate the sum of 67 + 51". Students do not need to give exact result of 118. They simply estimate the result where 67 are rounded to 70 and 51 are rounded to 50. Then the estimated result is 120 (close to the exact result of 118).
This kind of learning will make the students wonder about the purpose of learning. Why don’t we use the real exact result? What's it for? By seeing this, for more contextual learning, we brought students to go to shopping mall Mart that uses the retail price system, for example, 2,980 IDR, -; 32,770 IDR, -, etc. If students are accustomed to estimating, they can estimate the total purchase that has been made.
Students were divided into groups. In groups, students took the items they wanted to take (shop) within a certain of time. While taking the items, students were asked to estimate the total purchase they ought to pay later. After the time was up, the teacher accepted their estimated price and then went to the cashier to see the exact total price. The calculation on the checkout would be compared with the estimation that the students did with their group members.
After checking the price, the students returned the items they had taken to their place well and correctly. This learning activity went exceptionally well. Children were very enthusiastic and excited because they know that what they had learned is related to their daily lives.
Melkyanto : "After learning to apply the rounding and estimation lesson, I can now predict how much I should pay when I go shopping with my mother"
Jeszichow : "From this fieldtrip, I learn to estimate how much stuff I can buy with the amount of money I have."
