Service Learning Grade 1
But as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you – see that you excel in this act of grace also (2 Corinthians 8:7).
Applying the school vision and mission is the responsibility of all school citizens, including students. In reaching SDH vision and mission, there should be a real action that is conducted by students.
In the previous quarter, grade 1 students studied under the theme “Environment”. The students faced real problems in the environment. One of those problems was no trash bin was provided in the zoo that has been surveyed. This resulted on lack of cleanness in that environment because there were many trashes.
Therefore, grade 1 students were encouraged to fulfill SDH vision and mission through wisdom leads to action, which are #3 Caretaking Earth and #23 Unwrapping Gifts by providing trash bins that have been decorated. The theme of this event was “Look Around, Don’t Litter the Ground!”
In this event, we invited some parents to provide transportation. This event was started by gathering at school, and then went to the location together, which was Gunung Kekewang Resto and Family Recreation, in its mini zoo. There, the teacher led the students in a prayer, and then explained the activities that they would do. The students were divided into 12 groups that were guided by four teachers. After that, the students observed the environment with three guided questions, which were: 1) How is the condition of the zoo? 2) What are the reasons behind that condition? 3)What should we do?
After doing the observation, the students filled in an observation sheet. The teachers and students discussed the answers of the third question, then the teacher led students in a devotion. The devotion was taken from Genesis 1:26. The teacher encouraged the students to take care of the earth that belongs to God as they show their identity that is the image of God.
After knowing that taking care of the earth is God’s mandate, the students were encouraged to do a real action through providing trash bins that were decorated by them. In group, the students decorated those trash bins by using water color paint. While they were waiting for the paint to dry, they had lunch together.
Those trash bins were put in some areas that have been decided by the teachers. In those areas, there were pieces of a puzzle about Genesis 1:26. Then, the students arranged those pieces into a complete puzzle. This activity was ended by praying and taking pictures together.
This event is far from perfection. It is hoped that the evaluation and suggestion that have been given can help the teachers to prepare this kind of event in the next time. May the students get the meaning of this event that is to do a real action from the knowledge that they got.
